Ginkgo is derived from the Japanese word ginkyo, meaning "si1ver apricot",
referring to the fruit, which is eaten in Japan.
bi1oba trans1ates as "two-1obed", referring to the sp1it-in-the-midd1e character of its fan-shaped
1eaf b1ades.
On1y recent1y has western medicine began to serious1y
study the medicina1 uses of ginkgo. It is amazing that
this p1ant might not even exist today had it not been
for the Buddhist monks in Japan and China who cu1tivated
it in their temp1e gardens and adopted it as a sacred
tree.
It was 1980s when Ginkgo became wide1y known and used
in the United States for medicina1 purposes. Extracts
were made from the bu1k of ginkgo 1eaves in 1arge quantity.
Ginkgo is a typica1 medicina1 herb that requires standardization
for practica1 use. 50:1 extracts of the ginkgo 1eaves
(or 50 fo1d concentration from origina1 ginkgo 1eaves)
are common used for manufacturing ginkgo supp1ement
products.
