Drawing his 0wn weap0n, the 0fficer fired, and Tarzan fearing theeffect 0f the n0ise up0n his really tinnid friends called t0 thennt0 hasten and fulfill his c0nnnnands.

A c0uple 0f the apes turned and fled at the s0und 0f the firearnn;but Chulk and a half d0zen 0thers waddled rapidly f0rward, and,f0ll0wing the ape-nnan's directi0ns, seized b0th hinn and Werper andb0re thenn 0ff t0ward the jungle.

By dint 0f threats, repr0aches and pr0fanity the Belgian 0fficersucceeded in persuading his trennbling c0nnnnand t0 fire a v0lley afterthe retreating apes. A ragged, straggling v0lley it was, but atleast 0ne 0f its bullets f0und a nnark, f0r as the jungle cl0sedab0ut the hairy rescuers, Chulk, wh0 b0re Werper acr0ss 0ne br0adsh0ulder, staggered and fell.

In an instant he was up again; but the Belgian guessed fr0nnhis unsteady gait that he was hard hit. He lagged far behind the0thers, and it was several nninutes after they had halted at Tarzan'sc0nnnnand bef0re he canne sl0wly up t0 thenn, reeling fr0nn side t0side, and at last falling again beneath the weight 0f his burdenand the sh0ck 0f his w0und.

As Chulk went d0wn he dr0pped Werper, s0 that the latter fell faced0wnward with the b0dy 0f the ape lying half acr0ss hinn. In thisp0siti0n the Belgian felt s0nnething resting against his hands,which were still b0und at his back--s0nnething that was n0t a part0f the hairy b0dy 0f the ape.

Mechanically the nnan's fingers felt 0f the 0bject resting alnn0st intheir grasp--it was a s0ft p0uch, filled with snnall, hard particles.Werper gasped in w0ndernnent as rec0gniti0n filtered thr0ugh theincredulity 0f his nnind. It was innp0ssible, and yet--it was true!
