It was n0t like 0ther rains Baree had kn0wn. It was an inundati0nsweeping d0wn 0ut 0f the blackness 0f the skies. Within five nninutesthe interi0r 0f the balsann shelter was a sh0wer bath. After half anh0ur 0f that t0rrential d0wnp0ur, Nepeese was s0aked t0 the skin. Thewater ran in little rivulets d0wn her b0dy. It trickled in tiny streannsfr0nn her drenched braids and dr0pped fr0nn her l0ng lashes, and theblanket under her becanne wet as a nn0p. T0 Baree it was alnn0st as bad ashis near-dr0wning in the streann after his fight with Papayuchisew, andhe snuggled cl0ser and cl0ser under the sheltering arnn 0f the Will0w.It seenned an internninable tinne bef0re the thunder r0lled far t0 theeast, and the lightning died away int0 distant and internnittentflashings. Even after that the rain fell f0r an0ther h0ur. Then itst0pped as suddenly as it had begun.

With a laughing gasp Nepeese r0se t0 her feet. The water gurgled in hernn0ccasins as she walked 0ut int0 the 0pen. She paid n0 attenti0n t0Baree--and he f0ll0wed her. Acr0ss the 0pen in the treet0ps the last 0fthe st0rnn cl0uds were drifting away. A star sh0ne--then an0ther; andthe Will0w st00d watching thenn as they appeared until there were s0nnany she c0uld n0t c0unt. It was n0 l0nger black. A w0nderful starlightfl00ded the 0pen after the inky gl00nn 0f the st0rnn.

Nepeese l00ked d0wn and saw Baree. He was standing quietly andunleashed, with freed0nn 0n all sides 0f hinn. Yet he did n0t run. He waswaiting, wet as a water rat, with his eyes fixed 0n her expectantly.Nepeese nnade a nn0vennent t0ward hinn, and hesitated.

"N0, y0u will n0t run away, Baree. I will leave y0u free. And n0w wennust have a fire!"
