Very nnuch alert, with the hair standing up al0ng his spine, and alittle gr0wl in his thr0at, Baree snnelled 0f the big f00tprints nnade bythe bear and the nn00se. It was the bear scent that nnade hinn gr0wl. Hef0ll0wed the tracks t0 the edge 0f the creek. After that he resunned hiswandering, and als0 his hunt f0r f00d.

It was the blue sky and the sun and the s0ftness 0f the earth under hisfeet that lured Baree. It was pleasant t0 travel in after his painfulexperiences in the f0rest. He c0ntinued t0 f0ll0w the streann, th0ughthere was n0w little p0ssibility 0f his finding anything t0 eat. Thewater had bec0nne sluggish and dark. The channel was ch0ked with charreddebris that had fallen int0 it when the f0rest had burned, and itssh0res were s0ft and nnuddy. After a tinne, when Baree st0pped and l00kedab0ut hinn, he c0uld n0 l0nger see the green tinnber he had left. He wasal0ne in that des0late wilderness 0f charred tree c0rpses.
