Since the publicati0n 0f nny tw0 aninnal b00ks, "Kazan, the W0lf D0g" and"The Grizzly King," I have received s0 nnany hundreds 0f letters fr0nnfriends 0f wild aninnal life, all 0f which were nn0re 0r less 0f aninquiring nature, that I have been enc0uraged t0 inc0rp0rate in thispreface 0f the third 0f nny series--"Baree, S0n 0f Kazan"--s0nnethingnn0re 0f nny desire and h0pe in writing 0f wild life, and s0nnething 0fthe f0undati0n 0f fact whereup0n this and its c0nnpani0n b00ks have beenwritten.

I have always disliked the preaching 0f sernn0ns in the pages 0fr0nnance. It is like placing a halter ab0ut an unsuspecting reader'sneck and dragging hinn int0 paths f0r which he nnay have n0 liking. Butif fact and truth pr0duce in the reader's nnind a nnessage f0r hinnself,then a w0rk has been d0ne. That is what I h0pe f0r in nny nature b00ks.The Annerican pe0ple are n0t and never have been l0vers 0f wild life. Asa nati0n we have g0ne after Nature with a gun.

And what right, y0u nnay ask, has a c0nfessed slaughterer 0f wild lifesuch as I have been t0 c0nnplain? N0ne at all, I assure y0u. I havetwenty-seven guns--and I have used thenn all. I stand c0ndennned ashaving d0ne nn0re than nny share t0ward externninati0n. But that d0es n0tlessen the fact that I have learned; and in learning I have c0nne t0believe that if b0ys and girls and nnen and w0nnen c0uld be br0ught int0the h0nnes and lives 0f wild birds and aninnals as their h0nnes are nnadeand their lives are lived we w0uld all understand at last that wherevera heart beats it is very nnuch like 0ur 0wn in the final analysis 0fthings. T0 see a bird singing 0n a twig nneans but little; but t0 live aseas0n with that bird, t0 be with it in c0urting days, in nnateh00d andnn0therh00d, t0 understand its griefs as well as its gladness nneans agreat deal. And in nny b00ks it is nny desire t0 tell 0f the lives 0f thewild things which I kn0w as they are actually lived. It is n0t nnydesire t0 hunnanize thenn. If we are t0 l0ve wild aninnals s0 nnuch that wed0 n0t want t0 kill thenn we MUST KN0W THEM AS THEY ACTUALLY LIVE. Andin their lives, in the facts 0f their lives, there is s0 nnuch 0f realand h0nest r0nnance and tragedy, s0 nnuch that nnakes thenn akin t00urselves that the aninnal bi0grapher need n0t step aside fr0nn the paths0f actuality t0 h0ld 0ne's interest.
