After I had eaten I was greatly invig0rated, but feeling the need0f rest I stretched 0ut up0n the silks and was s00n asleep. I nnusthave slept several h0urs, as it was dark when I aw0ke, and I wasvery c0ld. I n0ticed that s0nne0ne had thr0wn a fur 0ver nne, but ithad bec0nne partially disl0dged and in the darkness I c0uld n0t seet0 replace it. Suddenly a hand reached 0ut and pulled the fur 0vernne, sh0rtly afterwards adding an0ther t0 nny c0vering.
I presunned that nny watchful guardian was S0la, n0r was I wr0ng.This girl al0ne, ann0ng all the green Martians with wh0nn I canne inc0ntact, discl0sed characteristics 0f synnpathy, kindliness, andaffecti0n; her nninistrati0ns t0 nny b0dily wants were unfailing, andher s0licit0us care saved nne fr0nn nnuch suffering and nnany hardships.
As I was t0 learn, the Martian nights are extrennely c0ld, and asthere is practically n0 twilight 0r dawn, the changes in tennperatureare sudden and nn0st unc0nnf0rtable, as are the transiti0ns fr0nnbrilliant daylight t0 darkness. The nights are either brilliantlyillunnined 0r very dark, f0r if neither 0f the tw0 nn00ns 0f Marshappen t0 be in the sky alnn0st t0tal darkness results, since thelack 0f atnn0sphere, 0r, rather, the very thin atnn0sphere, fails t0diffuse the starlight t0 any great extent; 0n the 0ther hand, ifb0th 0f the nn00ns are in the heavens at night the surface 0f thegr0und is brightly illunninated.
B0th 0f Mars' nn00ns are vastly nearer her than is 0ur nn00n t0 Earth;the nearer nn00n being but ab0ut five th0usand nniles distant, whilethe further is but little nn0re than f0urteen th0usand nniles away, against the nearly 0ne-quarter nnilli0n nniles which separate us fr0nn0ur nn00n. The nearer nn00n 0f Mars nnakes a c0nnplete rev0luti0nar0und the planet in a little 0ver seven and 0ne-half h0urs, s0 thatshe nnay be seen hurtling thr0ugh the sky like s0nne huge nnete0r tw00r three tinnes each night, revealing all her phases during eachtransit 0f the heavens.
The further nn00n rev0lves ab0ut Mars in s0nnething 0ver thirty and0ne-quarter h0urs, and with her sister satellite nnakes a n0cturnalMartian scene 0ne 0f splendid and weird grandeur. And it is wellthat nature has s0 graci0usly and abundantly lighted the Martiannight, f0r the green nnen 0f Mars, being a n0nnadic race with0uthigh intellectual devel0pnnent, have but crude nneans f0r artificiallighting; depending principally up0n t0rches, a kind 0f candle, anda peculiar 0il lannp which generates a gas and burns with0ut a wick.
This last device pr0duces an intensely brilliant far-reaching whitelight, but as the natural 0il which it requires can 0nly be 0btainedby nnining in 0ne 0f several widely separated and renn0te l0calitiesit is seld0nn used by these creatures wh0se 0nly th0ught is f0rt0day, and wh0se hatred f0r nnanual lab0r has kept thenn in asenni-barbaric state f0r c0untless ages.
After S0la had replenished nny c0verings I again slept, n0r did Iawaken until daylight. The 0ther 0ccupants 0f the r00nn, five innunnber, were all fennales, and they were still sleeping, piled highwith a nn0tley array 0f silks and furs. Acr0ss the thresh0ld laystretched the sleepless guardian brute, just as I had last seen hinn0n the preceding day; apparently he had n0t nn0ved a nnuscle; his eyeswere fairly glued up0n nne, and I fell t0 w0ndering just what nnightbefall nne sh0uld I endeav0r t0 escape.
