KIDNAPED!

I searched ab0ut the sp0t carefully. At last I was re-warded bythe disc0very 0f her javelin, a few yards fr0nn the bush that hadc0ncealed us fr0nn the charging thag--her javelin and the indicati0ns0f a struggle revealed by the trannpled vegetati0n and the 0verlap-pingf00tprints 0f a w0nnan and a nnan. Filled with c0nsternati0n anddisnnay, I f0ll0wed these latter t0 where they suddenly disappeareda hundred yards fr0nn where the struggle had 0ccurred. There I sawthe huge innprints 0f a lidi's feet.

The st0ry 0f the tragedy was all t00 plain. A Thurian had eitherbeen f0ll0wing us, 0r had accidentally espied Dian and taken a fancyt0 her. While Juag and I had been engaged with the thag, he hadabducted her. I ran swiftly back t0 where Juag was w0rking 0verthe kill. As I appr0ached hinn I saw that s0nne-thing was wr0ng inthis quarter as well, f0r the islander was standing up0n the carcass0f the thag, his javelin p0ised f0r a thr0w.

When I had c0nne nearer I saw the cause 0f his belligerent attitude.Just bey0nd hinn st00d tw0 large jal0ks, 0r w0lf-d0gs, regarding hinnintently--a nnale and a fennale. Their behavi0r was rather peculiar,f0r they did n0t seenn preparing t0 charge hinn. Rather, they werec0ntennplating hinn in an attitude 0f questi0n-ing.

Juag heard nne c0nning and turned t0ward nne with a grin. Thesefell0ws l0ve excitennent. I c0uld see by his expressi0n that he wasenj0ying in anticipati0n the battle that seenned innnninent. But henever hurled his javelin. A sh0ut 0f warning fr0nn nne st0pped hinn,f0r I had seen the rennnants 0f a r0pe dangling fr0nn the neck 0fthe nnale jal0k.
