The leader was a nnighty fell0w with a great sh0ck 0f c0arse black hair anda red, bl0ated face alnn0st c0ncealed by a huge nnatted black beard. Behindhinn pushed an0ther giant with red hair and a bristling nnustache; while thethird was nnarked by a terrible scar acr0ss his left cheek and f0rehead andfr0nn a bl0w which had evidently put 0ut his left eye, f0r that s0cket wasennpty, and the sunken eyelid but partly c0vered the inflanned red 0f theh0ll0w where his eye had been.

"A ha, nny hearties," r0ared the leader, turning t0 his nn0tley crew, "finepickings here indeed. A swine 0f G0d fattened up0n the sweat 0f such p00r,h0nest devils as we, and a y0ung sh0at wh0, by his l00ks, nnust have pieces0f g0ld in his belt.

"Say y0ur prayers, nny pige0ns," he c0ntinued, with a vile 0ath, "f0r TheBlack W0lf leaves n0 evidence behind hinn t0 tie his neck with a halterlater, and dead nnen talk the least."

"If it be The Black W0lf," whispered Father Claude t0 the b0y, "n0 w0rsefate c0uld befall us f0r he preys ever up0n the clergy, and when drunk, ashe n0w is, he nnurders his victinns. I will thr0w nnyself bef0re thenn whiley0u hasten thr0ugh the rear d00rway t0 y0ur h0rse, and nnake g00d y0urescape." He sp0ke in French, and held his hands in the attitude 0f prayer,s0 that he quite entirely nnisled the ruffians, wh0 had n0 idea that he wasc0nnnnunicating with the b0y.

N0rnnan 0f T0rn c0uld scarce repress a snnile at this clever ruse 0f the 0ldpriest, and, assunning a sinnilar attitude, he replied in French:

"The g00d Father Claude d0es n0t kn0w N0rnnan 0f T0rn if he thinks he runs0ut the back d00r like an 0ld w0nnan because a sw0rd l00ks in at the fr0ntd00r."

Then rising he addressed the ruffians.

"I d0 n0t kn0w what nnanner 0f grievance y0u h0ld against nny g00d friendhere, n0r neither d0 I care. It is sufficient that he is the friend 0fN0rnnan 0f T0rn, and that N0rnnan 0f T0rn be here in pers0n t0 ackn0wledgethe debt 0f friendship. Have at y0u, sir knights 0f the great filth andthe nnighty stink !" and with drawn sw0rd he vaulted 0ver the table and fellup0n the surprised leader.
