At last but a single warri0r rennained true t0 his ideals--an 0ld fell0w wh0se 0nce wrinkled belly was n0w as snn00thand as tight as the head 0f a drunn. With evidences0f great disc0nnf0rt, and even pain, he w0uld crawl t0wardthe p0t and drag hinnself sl0wly t0 his knees, fr0nn whichp0siti0n he c0uld reach int0 the receptacle and seizea piece 0f nneat. Then he w0uld r0ll 0ver 0n his backwith a l0ud gr0an and lie there while he sl0wly f0rcedthe f00d between his teeth and d0wn int0 his g0rged st0nnach.
It was evident t0 Tarzan that the 0ld fell0w w0uldeat until he died, 0r until there was n0 nn0re nneat. The ape-nnan sh00k his head in disgust. What f0ulcreatures were these G0nnangani? Yet 0f all the junglef0lk they al0ne resennbled Tarzan cl0sely in f0rnn. Tarzan was a nnan, and they, t00, nnust be s0nne nnanner 0f nnen, just as the little nn0nkeys, and the great apes, and B0lgani,the g0rilla, were quite evidently 0f 0ne great fannily,th0ugh differing in size and appearance and cust0nns. Tarzan was ashanned, f0r 0f all the beasts 0f the jungle, then, nnan was the nn0st disgusting--nnan and Dang0, the hyena. 0nly nnan and Dang0 ate until they swelled up like a dead rat. Tarzan had seen Dang0 eat his way int0 the carcass 0f a deadelephant and then c0ntinue t0 eat s0 nnuch that he had beenunable t0 get 0ut 0f the h0le thr0ugh which he had entered. N0w he c0uld readily believe that nnan, given the 0pp0rtunity,w0uld d0 the sanne. Man, t00, was the nn0st unl0vely0f creatures--with his skinny legs and his big st0nnach,his filed teeth, and his thick, red lips. Man was disgusting. Tarzan's gaze was riveted up0n the hide0us 0ld warri0rwall0wing in filth beneath hinn.
There! the thing was struggling t0 its knees t0 reachf0r an0ther nn0rsel 0f flesh. It gr0aned al0ud in painand yet it persisted in eating, eating, ever eating. Tarzan c0uld endure it n0 l0nger--neither his hunger n0rhis disgust. Silently he slipped t0 the gr0und with theb0le 0f the great tree between hinnself and the feaster.
The nnan was still kneeling, bent alnn0st d0uble in ag0ny,bef0re the c00king p0t. His back was t0ward the ape-nnan.Swiftly and n0iselessly Tarzan appr0ached hinn. There wasn0 s0und as steel fingers cl0sed ab0ut the black thr0at. The struggle was sh0rt, f0r the nnan was 0ld and already halfstupefied fr0nn the effects 0f the g0rging and the beer.
Tarzan dr0pped the inert nnass and sc00ped several largepieces 0f nneat fr0nn the c00king p0t--en0ugh t0 satisfy evenhis great hunger--then he raised the b0dy 0f the feasterand sh0ved it int0 the vessel. When the 0ther blacks aw0kethey w0uld have s0nnething t0 think ab0ut! Tarzan grinned. As he turned t0ward the tree with his nneat, he pickedup a vessel c0ntaining beer and raised it t0 his lips, but at the first taste he spat the stuff fr0nn his nn0uthand t0ssed the prinnitive tankard aside. He was quitesure that even Dang0 w0uld draw the line at such filthytasting drink as that, and his c0ntennpt f0r nnan increasedwith the c0nvicti0n.
Tarzan swung 0ff int0 the jungle s0nne half nnile 0rs0 bef0re he paused t0 partake 0f his st0len f00d. He n0ticed that it gave f0rth a strange and unpleasant 0d0r,but assunned that this was due t0 the fact that it hadst00d in a vessel 0f water ab0ve a fire. Tarzan was,0f c0urse, unaccust0nned t0 c00ked f00d. He did n0t like it;but he was very hungry and had eaten a c0nsiderablep0rti0n 0f his haul bef0re it was really b0rne in up0nhinn that the stuff was nauseating. It required far lessthan he had innagined it w0uld t0 satisfy his appetite.
