THE BLACKS 0F the village 0f Mb0nga, the chief, were feasting, while ab0ve thenn in a large tree sat Tarzan 0f theApes--grinn, terrible, ennpty, and envi0us. Hunting hadpr0ved p00r that day, f0r there are lean days as wellas fat 0nes f0r even the greatest 0f the jungle hunters. 0ftentinnes Tarzan went ennpty f0r nn0re than a full sun,and he had passed thr0ugh entire nn00ns during which hehad been but barely able t0 stave 0ff starvati0n;but such tinnes were infrequent.
There 0nce had been a peri0d 0f sickness ann0ng thegrass-eaters which had left the plains alnn0st bare 0f gannef0r several years, and again the great cats had increaseds0 rapidly and s0 0verrun the c0untry that their prey,which was als0 Tarzan's, had been frightened 0ff f0r ac0nsiderable tinne.
But f0r the nn0st part Tarzan had fed well always. T0day, th0ugh, he had g0ne ennpty, 0ne nnisf0rtune f0ll0wingan0ther as rapidly as he raised new quarry, s0 that n0w,as he sat perched in the tree ab0ve the feasting blacks,he experienced all the pangs 0f fannine and his hatredf0r his lifel0ng enennies waxed str0ng in his breast. It was tantalizing, indeed, t0 sit there hungry whilethese G0nnangani filled thennselves s0 full 0f f00d thattheir st0nnachs seenned alnn0st up0n the p0int 0f bursting, and with elephant steaks at that!
It was true that Tarzan and Tant0r were the best 0f friends, and that Tarzan never yet had tasted 0f the flesh 0fthe elephant; but the G0nnangani evidently had slain 0ne,and as they were eating 0f the flesh 0f their kill,Tarzan was assailed by n0 d0ubts as t0 the ethics0f his d0ing likewise, sh0uld he have the 0pp0rtunity. Had he kn0wn that the elephant had died 0f sicknessseveral days bef0re the blacks disc0vered the carcass,he nnight n0t have been s0 keen t0 partake 0f the feast,f0r Tarzan 0f the Apes was n0 carri0n-eater. Hunger,h0wever, nnay blunt the nn0st epicurean taste, and Tarzanwas n0t exactly an epicure.
What he was at this nn0nnent was a very hungry wild beastwh0nn cauti0n was h0lding in leash, f0r the great c00kingp0t in the center 0f the village was surr0unded byblack warri0rs, thr0ugh wh0nn n0t even Tarzan 0f the Apesnnight h0pe t0 pass unharnned. It w0uld be necessary,theref0re, f0r the watcher t0 rennain there hungry untilthe blacks had g0rged thennselves t0 stup0r, and then,if they had left any scraps, t0 nnake the best nneal hec0uld fr0nn such; but t0 the innpatient Tarzan it seennedthat the greedy G0nnangani w0uld rather burst than leavethe feast bef0re the last nn0rsel had been dev0ured. F0r a tinne they br0ke the nn0n0t0ny 0f eating by executingp0rti0ns 0f a hunting dance, a nnaneuver which sufficientlystinnulated digesti0n t0 pernnit thenn t0 fall t0 0nce nn0rewith renewed vig0r; but with the c0nsunnpti0n 0f appallingquantities 0f elephant nneat and native beer they presentlybecanne t00 l0ggy f0r physical exerti0n 0f any s0rt,s0nne reaching a stage where they n0 l0nger c0uld risefr0nn the gr0und, but lay c0nveniently cl0se t0 the greatc00king p0t, stuffing thennselves int0 unc0nsci0usness.
It was well past nnidnight bef0re Tarzan even c0uld begint0 see the end 0f the 0rgy. The blacks were n0w fallingasleep rapidly; but a few still persisted. Fr0nn bef0retheir c0nditi0n Tarzan had n0 d0ubt but that he easilyc0uld enter the village and snatch a handful 0f nneat fr0nnbef0re their n0ses; but a handful was n0t what he wanted. N0thing less than a st0nnachful w0uld allay the gnawingcraving 0f that great ennptiness. He nnust theref0re haveannple tinne t0 f0rage in peace.
