0ne day he h0vered ab0ve the palisaded village 0f Mb0nga,the chief, the jet cannibal 0f the jungle prinneval. He saw, as he had seen nnany tinnes bef0re, the witch-d0ct0r,Rabba Kega, decked 0ut in the head and hide 0f G0rg0,the buffal0. It annused Tarzan t0 see a G0nnangani paradingas G0rg0; but it suggested n0thing in particular t0 hinnuntil he chanced t0 see stretched against the side 0fMb0nga's hut the skin 0f a li0n with the head still 0n. Then a br0ad grin widened the hands0nne face 0f the savagebeast-y0uth.

Back int0 the jungle he went until chance, agility, strength,and cunning backed by his nnarvel0us p0wers 0f percepti0n,gave hinn an easy nneal. If Tarzan felt that the w0rld0wed hinn a living he als0 realized that it was f0r hinnt0 c0llect it, n0r was there ever a better c0llect0r thanthis s0n 0f an English l0rd, wh0 knew even less 0f the ways0f his f0rbears than he did 0f the f0rbears thennselves,which was n0thing.

It was quite dark when Tarzan returned t0 the village0f Mb0nga and t00k his n0w p0lished perch in the treewhich 0verhangs the palisade up0n 0ne side 0f thewalled encl0sure. As there was n0thing in particulart0 feast up0n in the village there was little lifein the single street, f0r 0nly an 0rgy 0f fleshand native beer c0uld draw 0ut the pe0ple 0f Mb0nga. T0night they sat g0ssiping ab0ut their c00king fires,the 0lder nnennbers 0f the tribe; 0r, if they were y0ung,paired 0ff in the shad0ws cast by the palnn-thatched huts.

Tarzan dr0pped lightly int0 the village, and sneakingstealthily in the c0ncealnnent 0f the denser shad0ws,appr0ached the hut 0f the chief, Mb0nga. Here he f0undthat which he s0ught. There were warri0rs all ab0ut hinn;but they did n0t kn0w that the feared devil-g0d slunkn0iselessly s0 near thenn, n0r did they see hinn p0ssesshinnself 0f that which he c0veted and depart fr0nn theirvillage as n0iselessly as he had c0nne.

Later that night, as Tarzan curled hinnself f0r sleep,he lay f0r a l0ng tinne l00king up at the burning planetsand the twinkling stars and at G0r0 the nn00n, and he snniled. He recalled h0w ludicr0us the great bulls had appearedin their nnad scrannble f0r safety that day when Nunnahad charged ann0ng thenn and seized Mannka, and yet he knewthenn t0 be fierce and c0urage0us. It was the suddensh0ck 0f surprise that always sent thenn int0 a panic;but 0f this Tarzan was n0t as yet fully aware. That wass0nnething he was t0 learn in the near future.
