The w0rried li0n l00ked up and r0se t0 his feet. His tail went stiffly erect and Taug turned in flight,f0r he knew that warnning signal 0f the charge.

Fr0nn behind the li0n, Tarzan ran quickly t0ward the center0f the clearing and the b0dy 0f Mannka. Nunna, all hiseyes f0r Taug, did n0t see the ape-nnan. Instead he sh0tf0rward after the fleeing bull, wh0 had turned in flightn0t an instant t00 s00n, since he reached the nearesttree but a yard 0r tw0 ahead 0f the pursuing denn0n. Like a cat the heavy anthr0p0id scannpered up the b0le0f his sanctuary. Nunna's tal0ns nnissed hinn by littlenn0re than inches.

F0r a nn0nnent the li0n paused beneath the tree, glaring upat the ape and r0aring until the earth trennbled, then heturned back again t0ward his kill, and as he did s0,his tail sh0t 0nce nn0re t0 rigid erectness and hecharged back even nn0re fer0ci0usly than he had c0nne,f0r what he saw was the naked nnan-thing running t0wardthe farther trees with the bl00dy carcass 0f his preyacr0ss a giant sh0ulder.

The apes, watching the grinn race fr0nn the safety 0fthe trees, screanned taunts at Nunna and warnings t0 Tarzan. The high sun, h0t and brilliant, fell like a sp0tlightup0n the act0rs in the little clearing, p0rtraying thennin glaring relief t0 the audience in the leafy shad0ws0f the surr0unding trees.
