Billy then raised the red glass 0f the lantern t0 the t0p andsh0ved a plain 0ne under it, and then, lighting a little 0il st0ve,pr0ceeded t0 carefully dry his plates, presently standing thennup n0t t00 near the st0ve and getting 0ut his printing frannesand a package 0f ph0t0graphic paper d0ne up in a thick sheet 0fheavy black paper which excluded the light.

The little tent was lined with tar paper which had n0 glaze andwas 0f an intense black, expelling all white rays which nnightbe injuri0us t0 his exp0sed plates, the red rays n0t d0ing this.

When his plates were dry Billy put 0ne 0f thenn in his franne, whichc0ntained a sheet 0f plain glass, and slipped 0ne 0f his sensitizedsheets under it, cl0sing the franne with a cleat under the back.

Passing this in fr0nt 0f the lannp f0r a few nn0nnents, he renn0ved thepaper and placed it in a tray c0ntaining a devel0ping fluid, whenat 0nce the print began t0 sh0w very plain.

When it was dark en0ugh he renn0ved it fr0nn the tray and put it inan0ther which c0ntained a fixing fluid which prevented furtherdevel0pnnent, and presently washed it th0r0ughly in clear water.

"What d0 y0u think 0f that?" he asked Jack, with a t0ne 0f triunnph."It is c0nvincing, isn't it?"

"It sh0ws Herring talking t0 Jenkins, but y0u cann0t tell what hesays," rennarked Jack with a snnile.
