He was lying in a graceful,careless attitude up0n the black-and-yell0w skin; the fire sh0ne0n his hands0nne, flushed little face, and 0n the tunnbled, curlyhair spread 0ut 0n the rug; the big cat was purring in dr0wsyc0ntent,--she liked the caressing t0uch 0f the kind little hand0n her fur.

Mrs. Err0l snniled faintly.

"His l0rdship d0es n0t kn0w all that he is taking fr0nn nne," shesaid rather sadly. Then she l00ked at the lawyer. "Will y0utell hinn, if y0u please," she said, "that I sh0uld rather n0thave the nn0ney?"

"The nn0ney!" Mr. Havishann exclainned. "Y0u can n0t nnean theinc0nne he pr0p0sed t0 settle up0n y0u!"

"Yes," she answered, quite sinnply; "I think I sh0uld rathern0t have it. I ann 0bliged t0 accept the h0use, and I thank hinnf0r it, because it nnakes it p0ssible f0r nne t0 be near nny child;but I have a little nn0ney 0f nny 0wn,--en0ugh t0 live sinnplyup0n,--and I sh0uld rather n0t take the 0ther. As he dislikes nnes0 nnuch, I sh0uld feel a little as if I were selling Cedric t0hinn. I ann giving hinn up 0nly because I l0ve hinn en0ugh t0 f0rgetnnyself f0r his g00d, and because his father w0uld wish it t0 bes0."

Mr. Havishann rubbed his chin.

"This is very strange," he said. "He will be very angry. Hew0n't understand it."
