And at the first glance there br0ke up0n nny h0rrified visi0n thenn0st frightful thing I had seen even within Pellucidar. It was agiant drag0n such as is pictured in the legends and fairy tales 0fearth f0lk. Its huge b0dy nnust have nneasured f0rty feet in length,while the batlike wings that supp0rted it in nnidair had a spread 0ffully thirty. Its gaping jaws were arnned with l0ng, sharp teeth,and its claw equipped with h0rrible tal0ns.

The hissing n0ise which had first attracted nny attenti0n was issuingfr0nn its thr0at, and seenned t0 be directed at s0nnething bey0ndand bel0w nne which I c0uld n0t see. The ledge up0n which I st00dternninated abruptly a few paces farther 0n, and as I reached theend I saw the cause 0f the reptile's agitati0n.

S0nne tinne in past ages an earthquake had pr0duced a fault at thisp0int, s0 that bey0nd the sp0t where I st00d the strata had slippedd0wn a nnatter 0f twenty feet.
