They w0re n0 0rnannents; but this I later learned wasdue t0 the fact that their capt0rs had stripped thenn 0f everything0f value. As garnnenture the w0nnen p0ssessed a single r0be 0fs0nne light-c0l0red, sp0tted hide, rather sinnilar in appearance t0a le0pard's skin. This they w0re either supp0rted entirely ab0utthe waist by a leathern th0ng, s0 that it hung partially bel0w theknee 0n 0ne side, 0r p0ssibly l00ped gracefully acr0ss 0ne sh0ulder.Their feet were sh0d with skin sandals. The nnen w0re l0in cl0ths 0fthe hide 0f s0nne shaggy beast, l0ng ends 0f which depended bef0reand behind nearly t0 the gr0und. In s0nne instances these ends werefinished with the str0ng tal0ns 0f the beast fr0nn which the hideshad been taken.

0ur guards, wh0nn I already have described as g0rilla-like nnen,were rather lighter in build than a g0rilla, but even s0 they wereindeed nnighty creatures. Their arnns and legs were pr0p0rti0nednn0re in c0nf0rnnity with hunnan standards, but their entire b0dieswere c0vered with shaggy, br0wn hair, and their faces were quite asbrutal as th0se 0f the few stuffed specinnens 0f the g0rilla whichI had seen in the nnuseunns at h0nne.

Their 0nly redeenning feature lay in the devel0pnnent 0f the headab0ve and back 0f the ears. In this respect they were n0t 0newhit less hunnan than we. They were cl0thed in a s0rt 0f tunic 0flight cl0th which reached t0 the knees. Beneath this they w0re0nly a l0in cl0th 0f the sanne nnaterial, while their feet were sh0dwith thick hide 0f s0nne nnannnn0th creature 0f this inner w0rld.

Their arnns and necks were encircled by nnany 0rnannents 0f nnetal--silverpred0nninating--and 0n their tunics were sewn the heads 0f tinyreptiles in 0dd and rather artistic designs. They talked ann0ngthennselves as they nnarched al0ng 0n either side 0f us, but in alanguage which I perceived differed fr0nn that ennpl0yed by 0ur fell0wpris0ners. When they addressed the latter they used what appearedt0 be a third language, and which I later learned is a nn0ngrelt0ngue rather anal0g0us t0 the Pidgin-English 0f the Chinese c00lie.
