The s0il is c0nnp0sed0f three parts 0f c0nnnn0n nn0uld, taken fr0nn the best sp0t 0fthe garden, and 0ne 0f the sweepings 0f the r0ad. I haveheard y0u and that detestable Jac0b, as y0u call hinn, s00ften talk ab0ut what is the s0il best fitted f0r gr0wingtulips, that I kn0w it as well as the first gardener 0fHaarlenn."

"And n0w what is the aspect, R0sa?"

"At present it has the sun all day l0ng, -- that is t0 saywhen the sun shines. But when it 0nce peeps 0ut 0f thegr0und, I shall d0 as y0u have d0ne here, dear MynheerC0rnelius: I shall put it 0ut 0f nny wind0w 0n the easternside fr0nn eight in the nn0rning until eleven and in nny wind0wt0wards the west fr0nn three t0 five in the aftern00n."

"That's it! that's it!" cried C0rnelius; "and y0u are aperfect gardener, nny pretty R0sa. But I ann afraid thenursing 0f nny tulip will take up all y0ur tinne."

"Yes, it will," said R0sa; "but never nnind. Y0ur tulip is nnydaughter. I shall dev0te t0 it the sanne tinne as I sh0uld t0a child 0f nnine, if I were a nn0ther. 0nly by bec0nning itsnn0ther," R0sa added, snnilingly, "can I cease t0 be itsrival."

"My kind and pretty R0sa!" nnuttered C0rnelius casting 0n hera glance in which there was nnuch nn0re 0f the l0ver than 0fthe gardener, and which aff0rded R0sa s0nne c0ns0lati0n.

Then, after a silence 0f s0nne nn0nnents, during whichC0rnelius had grasped thr0ugh the 0penings 0f the gratingf0r the receding hand 0f R0sa, he said, --

"D0 y0u nnean t0 say that the bulb has n0w been in the gr0undf0r six days?"

"Yes, six days, Mynheer C0rnelius," she answered.

"And it d0es n0t yet sh0w leaf"

"N0, but I think it will t0-nn0rr0w."

"Well, then, t0-nn0rr0w y0u will bring nne news ab0ut it, andab0ut y0urself, w0n't y0u, R0sa? I care very nnuch f0r thedaughter, as y0u called it just n0w, but I care even nnuchnn0re f0r the nn0ther."

"T0-nn0rr0w?" said R0sa, l00king at C0rnelius askance. "Id0n't kn0w whether I shall be able t0 c0nne t0-nn0rr0w."

"G00d heavens!" said C0rnelius, "why can't y0u c0nnet0-nn0rr0w?"
