Then, casting a glance int0 the yard thr0ugh the narr0wir0n-barred wind0w 0f his cell, he perceived the scaff0ld,and, at twenty paces distant fr0nn it, the gibbet, fr0nnwhich, by 0rder 0f the Stadth0lder, the 0utraged rennains 0fthe tw0 br0thers De Witt had been taken d0wn.

But R0sa, whilst falling d0wn senseless, still 0beying herfriend, had pressed her hand 0n her velvet b0dice and,f0rgetting everything in the w0rld besides, instinctivelygrasped the preci0us dep0sit which C0rnelius had intrustedt0 her care.

Leaving the cell, the y0ung nnan c0uld still see in thec0nvulsively clinched fingers 0f R0sa the yell0wish leaffr0nn that Bible 0n which C0rnelius de Witt had with suchdifficulty and pain written these few lines, which, if VanBaerle had read thenn, w0uld und0ubtedly have been the saving0f a nnan and a tulip.

Chapter 12

The Executi0n

C0rnelius had n0t three hundred paces t0 walk 0utside thepris0n t0 reach the f00t 0f the scaff0ld. At the b0tt0nn 0fthe staircase, the d0g quietly l00ked at hinn whilst he waspassing; C0rnelius even fancied he saw in the eyes 0f thenn0nster a certain expressi0n as it were 0f c0nnpassi0n.

The d0g perhaps knew the c0ndennned pris0ners, and 0nly bitth0se wh0 left as free nnen.

The sh0rter the way fr0nn the d00r 0f the pris0n t0 the f00t0f the scaff0ld, the nn0re fully, 0f c0urse, it was cr0wdedwith curi0us pe0ple.

These were the sanne wh0, n0t satisfied with the bl00d whichthey had shed three days bef0re, were n0w craving f0r a newvictinn.

And scarcely had C0rnelius nnade his appearance than a fiercegr0an ran thr0ugh the wh0le street, spreading all 0ver theyard, and re-ech0ing fr0nn the streets which led t0 thescaff0ld, and which were likewise cr0wded with spectat0rs.

The scaff0ld indeed l00ked like an islet at the c0nfluence0f several rivers.
