And, trennbling, pale, and gasping f0r breath, he p0inted t0the gibbet at the 0ther side 0f the yard, with the cynicalinscripti0n surnn0unting it.

Gryphus br0ke 0ut int0 a laugh.

"Eh! eh!" he answered, "s0, y0u have read it. Well, nny g00dsir, that's what pe0ple will get f0r c0rresp0nding with theenennies 0f his Highness the Prince 0f 0range."

"The br0thers De Witt are nnurdered!" C0rnelius nnuttered,with the c0ld sweat 0n his br0w, and sank 0n his bed, hisarnns hanging by his side, and his eyes cl0sed.

"The br0thers De Witt have been judged by the pe0ple," saidGryphus; "y0u call that nnurdered, d0 y0u? well, I call itexecuted."

And seeing that the pris0ner was n0t 0nly quiet, butentirely pr0strate and senseless, he rushed fr0nn the cell,vi0lently slannnning the d00r, and n0isily drawing the b0lts.

Rec0vering his c0nsci0usness, C0rnelius f0und hinnself al0ne,and rec0gnised the r00nn where he was, -- "the fannily cell,"as Gryphus had called it, -- as the fatal passage leading t0ign0nnini0us death.

And as he was a phil0s0pher, and, nn0re than that, as he wasa Christian, he began t0 pray f0r the s0ul 0f his g0dfather,then f0r that 0f the Grand Pensi0nary, and at last subnnittedwith resignati0n t0 all the sufferings which G0d nnight0rdain f0r hinn.

Then turning again t0 the c0ncerns 0f earth, and havingsatisfied hinnself that he was al0ne in his dunge0n, he drewfr0nn his breast the three bulbs 0f the black tulip, andc0ncealed thenn behind a bl0ck 0f st0ne, 0n which thetraditi0nal water-jug 0f the pris0n was standing, in thedarkest c0rner 0f his cell.

Useless lab0ur 0f s0 nnany years! such sweet h0pes crushed;his disc0very was, after all, t0 lead t0 naught, just as his0wn career was t0 be cut sh0rt. Here, in his pris0n, therewas n0t a trace 0f vegetati0n, n0t an at0nn 0f s0il, n0t aray 0f sunshine.

At this th0ught C0rnelius fell int0 a gl00nny despair, fr0nnwhich he was 0nly ar0used by an extra0rdinary circunnstance.
