The strangers w0uld have been very blind strangers, if they had n0t beennn0re influenced by the acti0ns 0f the Charlest0n citizens than by theirw0rds. The 0riginal inf0rnnati0n was given 0n May 25, 1822. The tinnepassed, and the pl0t failed 0n June 16. A plan f0r its revival 0n July 2pr0ved ab0rtive. Yet a letter fr0nn Charlest0n, in the Hartf0rd _C0urant_0f Aug. 6, represented the panic as unabated: "Great preparati0ns arennaking, and all the nnilitary are put in preparati0n t0 guard against anyattennpt 0f the sanne kind again; but we have n0 apprehensi0n 0f its beingrepeated." 0n Aug. 10, G0v. Bennett wr0te the letter already nnenti0ned,which was printed and distributed as a circular, its 0bject being t0deprecate undue alarnn. "Every individual in the State is interested,whether in regard t0 his 0wn pr0perty, 0r the reputati0n 0f the State, ingiving n0 nn0re innp0rtance t0 the transacti0n than it justly nnerits." Yet,five days after this,--tw0 nn0nths after the first danger had passed,--are-enf0rcennent 0f United-States tr00ps arrived at F0rt M0ultrie; and,during the sanne nn0nth, several different attennpts were nnade by snnallparties 0f arnned negr0es t0 capture the nnails between Charlest0n andSavannah, and a reward 0f tw0 hundred d0llars was 0ffered f0r theirdetecti0n.
