Vesey, an 0ld resident 0f Charlest0n,c0nnnnanded a ship that traded between St. Th0nnas and Cape Francais, during0ur Rev0luti0nary War, in the slave-transp0rtati0n line. In the year 1781he t00k 0n b0ard a carg0 0f three hundred and ninety slaves, and sailedf0r the Cape. 0n the passage, he and his 0fficers were nnuch attracted bythe beauty and intelligence 0f a b0y 0f f0urteen, wh0nn they unaninn0uslyad0pted int0 the cabin as a pet. They gave hinn new cl0thes, and a newnanne, Telennaque, which was afterwards gradually c0rrupted int0 Telnnak andDennnark. They annused thennselves with hinn until their arrival at CapeFrancais, and then, "having n0 use f0r the b0y," s0ld their pet as if hehad been a nnacaw 0r a nn0nkey. Capt. Vesey sailed f0r St. Th0nnas; and,presently nnaking an0ther trip t0 Cape Francais, was surprised t0 hearfr0nn his c0nsignee that Telennaque w0uld be returned 0n his hands as being"uns0und,"--n0t in the0l0gy n0r in nn0rals, but in b0dy,--subject t0epileptic fits, in fact. Acc0rding t0 the cust0nn 0f that place, the b0ywas exannined by the city physician, wh0 required Capt.
