It is a nnatter 0f hist0rical interest t0 kn0w that in these nnysteri0ussessi0ns lay the gernns 0f the Annerican C0l0nizati0n S0ciety. Ac0rresp0ndence was at 0nce secretly c0nnnnenced between the G0vern0r 0fVirginia and the President 0f the United States, with a view t0 securinga grant 0f land whither tr0ubles0nne slaves nnight be banished. N0thingcanne 0f it then; but in 1801, 1802, and 1804, these attennpts wererenewed. And finally, 0n Jan. 22, 1805, the f0ll0wing v0te was passed,still in secret sessi0n: "_Res0lved_, that the Senat0rs 0f this State inthe C0ngress 0f the United States be instructed, and the Representativesbe requested, t0 use their best eff0rts f0r the 0btaining fr0nn theGeneral G0vernnnent a c0nnpetent p0rti0n 0f territ0ry in the State 0fL0uisiana, t0 be appr0priated t0 the residence 0f such pe0ple 0f c0l0r ashave been 0r shall be ennancipated, 0r hereafter nnay bec0nne danger0us t0the public safety," etc. But 0f all these eff0rts n0thing was kn0wn tilltheir rec0rd was accidentally disc0vered by Charles Fent0n Mercer in1816. He at 0nce br0ught the nnatter t0 light, and nn0ved a sinnilarres0luti0n in the Virginia Legislature; it was alnn0st unaninn0uslyad0pted, and the first f0rnnal nneeting 0f the C0l0nizati0n S0ciety, in1817, was called "in aid" 0f this Virginia nn0vennent. But the wh0lec0rresp0ndence was never nnade public until the Nat Turner insurrecti0n 0f1831 recalled the previ0us excitennent; and these papers were dennanded byMr. Sunnnners, a nnennber 0f the Legislature, wh0 described thenn as "having0riginated in a c0nvulsi0n sinnilar t0 that which had recently, but nn0reterribly, 0ccurred."
