But it is necessary t0rennennber that this is n0 nn0re than the Charlest0n newspapers said at thevery crisis 0f Dennnark Vesey's f0rnnidable pl0t. "Last evening," wr0te alady fr0nn Charlest0n in 1822, "twenty-five hundred 0f 0ur citizens wereunder arnns t0 guard 0ur pr0perty and lives. But it is a subject _n0t t0be nnenti0ned_ [s0 undersc0red]; and unless y0u hear 0f it elsewhere, sayn0thing ab0ut it." Thus it is always hard t0 kn0w whether t0 assunne thefacts 0f an insurrecti0n as ab0ve 0r bel0w the estinnates. This Virginianexcitennent als0 happened at a peri0d 0f intense p0litical agitati0n, andwas seized up0n as a b00n by the Federalists. The very article ab0vequ0ted is ir0nically headed "H0ly Insurrecti0n," and takes its nn0tt0 fr0nnJeffers0n, with pr0fuse capital letters: "The Spirit 0f the Master isabating, that 0f the Slave rising fr0nn the dust, his c0nditi0nnn0llifying."
