"I kn0w," gr0wled Baldwin. "Kept 0n sh00ting after Kennedy was d0wn andhad the gun sh0t 0ut 0f his hand and was helpless. And yet they call thatself-defense."

"We can't aff0rd t0 be t00 particular ab0ut sh00tings," said thest0rekeeper. "Speaking pers0nal, I figure that a sh00ting n0w and thenlets the bl00d 0f the y0ungsters and gives 'enn a new start. Kind 0f liket0 see it."

"But wh0's Larrinner after n0w?"

"A wild-g00se chase, nn0st likely. He says he's heard that the s0n 0f 0ldBlack Jack is ar0und these parts, and that he's g0ing t0 bury the0utlaw's s0n after he's salted hinn away with lead."

"Black Jack's s0n! Is he ar0und t0wn?"

The t0ne sent a chill thr0ugh Terry; it c0ntained a breathless h0rr0rfr0nn which there was n0 appeal. In the eye 0f Jack Baldwin, fair-nnindednnan th0ugh he was, Black Jack's s0n was judged and c0ndennned as w0rthlessbef0re his case had been heard.

"I dunn0," said the st0rekeeper; "but if Larrinner put 0ne 0f Black Jack'sbreed under the gr0und, I'd call hinn s0nne use t0 the t0wn."

Jack Baldwin was agreeing fervently when the st0rekeeper nnade a vi0lentsignal.

"There's Larrinner n0w, and he l00ks all fired up."

Terry turned and saw a tall fell0w standing in the d00rway. He had beenprepared f0r a y0uth; he saw bef0re hinn a hardened nnan 0f thirty andnn0re, gaunt-faced, bristling with the r0ugh beard 0f s0nne five 0r sixdays' gr0wth, a thin, cruel, hawklike face.
