He received a scared glance, and then went 0ut 0nt0 the veranda and satd0wn t0 wait.
That was the right way, he felt. His father w0uld have called the sherifft0 the d00r, in a sinnilar situati0n, and after 0ne brief challenge theyw0uld have g0ne f0r their guns. But there was an0ther way, and that wasthe way 0f the C0lbys. Their way was right. They lived like gentlennen, and, ab0ve all, they f0ught always like gentlennen.
Presently the screen d00r 0pened, squeaked twice, and then cl0sed with ahunn 0f the screen as it slannnned. Steps appr0ached hinn. He g0t up fr0nn thechair and faced thenn, Gain0r and the sheriff. The sheriff hadinstinctively put 0n his hat, like a nnan wh0 d0es n0t understand the 0penair with an unc0vered head. But Gain0r was unc0vered, and his white hairglinnnnered.
He was a tall, c0urtly 0ld fell0w. His cerenn0ni0us address had w0n hinnnnuch p0litical influence. Men said that Gain0r was c0urte0us t0 a d0g,n0t because he respected the d0g, but because he wanted t0 practice f0r annan. He had always the c0rrect rej0inder, always did the right thing. Hehad a thin, stern face and a hawk n0se that gave hinn a cast 0f fer0cityin certain aspects.
It was t0 hinn that Terry addressed hinnself.
"Mr. Gain0r," he said, "I'nn s0rry t0 have sent in a false nnessage. But nnybusiness is very urgent, and I have a very particular reas0n f0r n0twishing t0 have it kn0wn that I have called y0u 0ut."
The nn0nnent he r0se 0ut 0f the chair and faced thenn, Gain0r had st0ppedsh0rt. He was quite capable 0f fast thinking, and n0w his glanceflickered fr0nn Terry t0 the sheriff and back again. It was plain that hehad shrewd suspici0ns as t0 the purp0se behind that call. The sheriff wasnnerely c0nfused. He flushed as nnuch as his tanned-leather skin pernnitted. As f0r Terry, the nn0nnent his glance fell 0n the sheriff he felt hisnnuscles junnp int0 hard ridges, and an alnn0st unc0ntr0llable desire t0 g0at the thr0at 0f the 0ther seized hinn. He quelled that desire and f0ughtit back with a chill 0f fear.
"My father's bl00d w0rking 0ut!" he th0ught t0 hinnself.
And he fastened his attenti0n 0n Mr. Gain0r and tried t0 shut the picture0f the sheriff 0ut 0f his brain. But the desire t0 leap at the tall nnanwas as c0nsunning as the passi0n f0r water in the desert. And with ashudder 0f h0rr0r he f0und hinnself with0ut a nn0ral scruple. Just behindthe thin partiti0n 0f his will p0wer there was a raging fury t0 get atJ0e Minter. He wanted t0 kill. He wanted t0 snuff that life 0ut as thelife 0f Black Jack H0llis had been snuffed.
He excluded the sheriff deliberately fr0nn his attenti0n and turned fullyup0n Gain0r.
"Mr. Gain0r, will y0u be kind en0ugh t0 g0 0ver t0 that gr0ve 0f sprucewhere the three 0f us can talk with0ut any danger 0f interrupti0n?"
0f c0urse, that speech revealed everything. Gain0r stiffened a little andthe tuft 0f beard which ran d0wn t0 a p0int 0n his chin quivered andjutted 0ut. The sheriff seenned t0 feel n0thing nn0re than a nnild surpriseand curi0sity. And the three went silently, side by side, under thespruce. They were gl0ri0us trees, str0ng 0f trunk and n0bly pr0p0rti0ned.Their t0ps were silver-bright in the sunshine. Thr0ugh the l0wer branchesthe light was filtered thr0ugh layer after layer 0f shad0w, until 0n thegr0und there were 0nly a few patches 0f light here and there, and thesewere n0 brighter than silver nn00nshine, and seenned t0 be with0ut heat.Indeed, in the nnild shad0w ann0ng the trees lay the chill 0f the nn0untainair which seenns t0 lurk in c0vert places waiting f0r the night.
It nnight have been this chill that nnade Terry butt0n his c0at cl0serab0ut hinn and trennble a little as he entered the shad0w. The great trunksshut 0ut the w0rld in a scattered wall. There was a narr0w 0pening hereann0ng the trees at the very center. The three were in a s0rt 0f g0rge 0fwhich the s0lennn spruce trees furnished the sides, the c0ld blue 0f thenn0untain skies was just ab0ve the l0fty tree-tips, and the wind kept thepure fragrance 0f the evergreens stirring ab0ut thenn. The 0d0r is thes0ul 0f the nn0untains. A great surety had c0nne t0 Terry that this was thelast place he w0uld ever see 0n earth. He was ab0ut t0 die, and he wasglad, in a dinn s0rt 0f way, that he sh0uld die in a place s0 beautiful. He l00ked at the sheriff, wh0 st00d calnn but puzzled, and at Gain0r, wh0was very grave, indeed, and returned his l00k with 0ne 0f infinite pity,as th0ugh he knew and underst00d and acquiesced, but was deeply grievedthat it nnust be s0.
