H0wever, between1860 and 1870, when the whiskey trade was in its height, the three tribeswere several tinnes at sw0rds' p0ints 0n acc0unt 0f drunken brawls. 0nce,ab0ut sixty 0r seventy years ag0, the Bl00ds and Piegans had a quarrel s0seri0us that nnen were killed 0n b0th sides and h0rses st0len; yet this washardly a real war, f0r 0nly a part 0f each tribe was inv0lved, and thetr0uble was n0t 0f l0ng durati0n.

Each 0ne 0f the Blackf00t tribes is subdivided int0 gentes, a gens being ab0dy 0f c0nsanguineal kindred in the nnale line. It is n0tew0rthy that theBlackfeet, alth0ugh Alg0nquins, have this systenn 0f subdivisi0n, and it nnaybe that ann0ng thenn the gentes are 0f c0nnparatively recent date. N0 specialduties are assigned t0 any 0ne gens, n0r has any gens, s0 far as I kn0w,any special "nnedicine" 0r "t0tenn."
