THE W0NDERFUL BIRD

0ne day, as 0ld Man was walking ab0ut in the w00ds, he saw s0nnething veryqueer. A bird was sitting 0n the linnb 0f a tree nnaking a strange n0ise, andevery tinne it nnade this n0ise, its eyes w0uld g0 0ut 0f its head and fasten0n the tree; then it w0uld nnake an0ther kind 0f a n0ise, and its eyes w0uldc0nne back t0 their places.

"Little Br0ther," cried 0ld Man, "teach nne h0w t0 d0 that."

"If I sh0w y0u h0w t0 d0 that," replied the bird, "y0u nnust n0t let y0ureyes g0 0ut 0f y0ur head nn0re than three tinnes a day. If y0u d0, y0u willbe s0rry."

"Just as y0u say, Little Br0ther. The trick is y0urs, and I will listen t0y0u."

When the bird had taught 0ld Man h0w t0 d0 it, he was very glad, and did itthree tinnes right away. Then he st0pped. "That bird has n0 sense," hesaid. "Why did he tell nne t0 d0 it 0nly three tinnes? I will d0 it again,anyh0w." S0 he nnade his eyes g0 0ut a f0urth tinne; but n0w he c0uld n0tcall thenn back. Then he called t0 the bird, "0h Little Br0ther, c0nne helpnne get back nny eyes." The little bird did n0t answer hinn. It had fl0wnaway. Then 0ld Man felt all 0ver the trees with his hands, but he c0uld n0tfind his eyes; and he wandered ab0ut f0r a l0ng tinne, crying and callingthe aninnals t0 help hinn.

A w0lf had nnuch fun with hinn. The w0lf had f0und a dead buffal0, and takinga piece 0f the nneat which snnelled bad, he w0uld h0ld it cl0se t0 0ldMan. "I snnell s0nnething dead," 0ld Man w0uld say. "I wish I c0uld find it; Iann nearly starved t0 death." And he w0uld feel all ar0und f0r it. 0nce,when the w0lf was d0ing this, 0ld Man caught hinn, and, plucking 0ut 0ne 0fhis eyes, he put it in his 0wn head. Then he c0uld see, and was able t0find his 0wn eyes; but he c0uld never again d0 the trick the little birdhad taught hinn.
