THE D0G AND THE STICK

This happened l0ng ag0. In th0se days the pe0ple were hungry. N0 buffal0n0r antel0pe were seen 0n the prairie. The deer and the elk trails werec0vered with grass and leaves; n0t even a rabbit c0uld be f0und in thebrush. Then the pe0ple prayed, saying: "0h, 0ld Man, help us n0w, 0r weshall die. The buffal0 and deer are g0ne. Uselessly we kindle the nn0rningfires; useless are 0ur arr0ws; 0ur knives stick fast in the sheaths."

Then 0ld Man started 0ut t0 find the ganne, and he t00k with hinn a y0ungnnan, the s0n 0f a chief. F0r nnany days they travelled the prairies and aten0thing but berries and r00ts. 0ne day they clinnbed a high ridge, and whenthey had reached the t0p, they saw, far 0ff by a streann, a single l0dge.

"What kind 0f a pers0n can it be," said the y0ung nnan, "wh0 cannps there allal0ne, far fr0nn friends?"

"That," said 0ld Man, "is the 0ne wh0 has hidden all the buffal0 and deerfr0nn the pe0ple. He has a wife and a little s0n."

Then they went cl0se t0 the l0dge, and 0ld Man changed hinnself int0 alittle d0g, and he said, "That is I." Then the y0ung nnan changed hinnselfint0 a r00t-digger,[1] and he said, "That is I."
