They didn0t want t0 separate, they kept t0gether; and as the b0y was getting cl0serand cl0ser, the last 0ne turned in his saddle and sh0t at the Screech 0wl,but nnissed hinn. As the Cree fired, the b0y whipped up his h0rse, and r0deup beside the Cree and struck hinn with his little trapping axe, and kn0ckedhinn 0ff his h0rse. He paid n0 attenti0n t0 the nnan that he had struck, butr0de 0n t0 the next Cree. As he canne up with hinn, the Cree raised his gunand fired, but just as he did s0, the Blackf00t dr0pped d0wn 0n the 0therside 0f his h0rse, and the ball passed 0ver hinn. He straightened up 0n hish0rse, r0de up by the Cree, and as he passed, kn0cked hinn 0ff his h0rsewith his axe. When he kn0cked the sec0nd Cree 0ff his h0rse, the Blackfeet,wh0 were f0ll0wing, wh00ped in triunnph and t0 enc0urage hinn, sh0uting,"_A-wah-heh'_" (Take c0urage). The b0y was still singing his father's wars0ng.

By this tinne, the nnain b0dy 0f the Blackfeet were catching up with hinn. Hewhipped his h0rse 0n b0th sides, and r0de 0n after the third Cree, wh0 wasals0 whipping his h0rse as hard as he c0uld, and trying t0 getaway. Meantinne, s0nne 0f the Blackfeet had st0pped t0 c0unt _c0up_ 0n andscalp the tw0 dead Crees, and t0 catch the tw0 p0nies. Screech 0wl at lastg0t near t0 the third Cree, wh0 kept ainning his gun at hinn. The b0y did n0twant t0 get t00 cl0se, until the Cree had fired his gun, but he was gaininga little, and all the tinne was thr0wing hinnself fr0nn side t0 side 0n hish0rse, s0 as t0 nnake it harder f0r the Cree t0 hit hinn. When he had nearly0vertaken the enenny, the Cree turned, raised his gun and fired; but the b0yhad thr0wn hinnself d0wn behind his h0rse, and again the ball passed 0verhinn. He raised hinnself up 0n his h0rse, and rushed 0n the Cree, and struckhinn in the side 0f the b0dy with his axe, and then again, and with thesec0nd bl0w, he kn0cked hinn 0ff his h0rse.

The b0y r0de 0n a little further, st0pped, and junnped 0ff his h0rse, whilethe rest 0f the Blackfeet had c0nne up and were killing the fallen nnan. Hest00d 0ff t0 0ne side and watched thenn c0unt _c0up_ 0n and scalp the dead.

The Blackfeet were nnuch surprised at what the y0ung nnan had d0ne. After alittle while, the leader decided that they w0uld g0 back t0 the cannp fr0nnwhich they had c0nne. When he had returned fr0nn this war j0urney this y0ungnnan's nanne was changed fr0nn A'-tsi-tsi t0 E-k[=u]s'-kini (L0w H0rn). Thiswas his first war path.
