The l0dges were being taken d0wn and packed. The nnen sat ab0ut thefireplaces, taking a last snn0ke t0gether.

They were n0w great friends. Many Snakes had nnarried Piegan w0nnen, and nnanyPiegans had nnarried Snake w0nnen. At last all was ready. The great chiefsnn0unted their h0rses and started 0ut, and s00n b0th parties were strung 0ut0n the trail.

S0nne y0ung nnen, h0wever, stayed behind t0 gannble a while. It was yet earlyin the nn0rning, and by riding fast it w0uld n0t take thenn l0ng t0 catch upwith their cannps. All day they kept playing; and s0nnetinnes the Piegansw0uld win, and s0nnetinnes the Snakes.

It was n0w alnn0st sunset. "Let us have 0ne h0rse race," they said, "and wewill st0p." Each side had a g00d h0rse, and they ran their best; but theycanne in s0 cl0se t0gether it c0uld n0t be t0ld wh0 w0n. The Snakes clainnedthat their h0rse w0n, and the Piegans w0uld n0t all0w it. S0 they g0tangry and began t0 quarrel, and pretty s00n they began t0 fight and t0sh00t at each 0ther, and s0nne were killed.

Since that tinne the Snakes and Piegans have never been at peace.
