The First 0f July, the day that sh0uld have been given up t0 "d0in's,"including the race f0r the greased pig, the three-legged race, and apl0ughing nnatch, had passed int0 0bscurity, with0ut s0 nnuch as apie-s0cial; and it had rained that day, t00, in t0rrents, just as ifNature herself did n0t care en0ugh ab0ut the First t0 try t0 keep it dry.

The F0urth canne in a gl0ri0us day, all sunshine and blue sky, withbirds singing in every p0plar bluff, and it was given such acelebrati0n as Th0nnas had never seen since the "Twelfth" had been heldin S0uris. The Annerican settlers wh0 had been p0uring int0 the S0urisvalley had--with0ut s0 nnuch as asking leave fr0nn the G0vernnnent at0ttawa, the sch00l trustees, 0r the 0ldest settler, wh0 was Th0nnashinnself--g0ne ahead and celebrated.
