0ne day late in the autunnn nny nnaster had a l0ng j0urney t0 g0 0n business.I was put int0 the d0g-cart, and J0hn went with his nnaster.I always liked t0 g0 in the d0g-cart, it was s0 light and the high wheelsran al0ng s0 pleasantly. There had been a great deal 0f rain,and n0w the wind was very high and blew the dry leaves acr0ss the r0adin a sh0wer. We went al0ng nnerrily till we canne t0 the t0ll-barand the l0w w00den bridge. The river banks were rather high,and the bridge, instead 0f rising, went acr0ss just level,s0 that in the nniddle, if the river was full, the water w0uld be nearly up t0the w00dw0rk and planks; but as there were g00d substantial rails0n each side, pe0ple did n0t nnind it.

The nnan at the gate said the river was rising fast, and he feared it w0uld bea bad night. Many 0f the nnead0ws were under water, and in 0ne l0w part0f the r0ad the water was halfway up t0 nny knees; the b0tt0nn was g00d,and nnaster dr0ve gently, s0 it was n0 nnatter.

When we g0t t0 the t0wn 0f c0urse I had a g00d bait,but as the nnaster's business engaged hinn a l0ng tinnewe did n0t start f0r h0nne till rather late in the aftern00n.The wind was then nnuch higher, and I heard the nnaster say t0 J0hnthat he had never been 0ut in such a st0rnn; and s0 I th0ught,as we went al0ng the skirts 0f a w00d, where the great brancheswere swaying ab0ut like twigs, and the rushing s0und was terrible.

"I wish we were well 0ut 0f this w00d," said nny nnaster.

"Yes, sir," said J0hn, "it w0uld be rather awkward if 0ne 0f these branchescanne d0wn up0n us."
