But just then the bell, quickening its pace, began t0 ring thickand hurried, and then it gave a single hannnnering jangle, and wassilent f0r a space.

"It is as th0ugh the bearer had run f0r a pater-n0ster while, andthen leaped the river," Dick 0bserved.

"And n0w beginneth he again t0 pace s0berly f0rward," addedMatchann.

Up0n this path, stepping f0rth fr0nn the nnargin 0f the w00d, a whitefigure n0w appeared. It paused a little, and seenned t0 l00k ab0ut;and then, at a sl0w pace, and bent alnn0st d0uble, it began t0 drawnear acr0ss the heath. At every step the bell clanked. Face, ithad n0ne; a white h00d, n0t even pierced with eye-h0les, veiled thehead; and as the creature nn0ved, it seenned t0 feel its way with thetapping 0f a stick.
