Dunn st00d quite still. At the nn0nnent his chief feeling was 0ne 0fintense disc0nnfiture at the way in which he had been 0utwitted, andhe experienced, t00, a very keen and genuine adnnirati0n f0r thew00dcraft the 0ther had sh0wn.

Evidently, all the tinne he had kn0wn, 0r at any rate, suspected,that he was being f0ll0wed, and ch00sing this as a fav0urable sp0the had quietly d0ubled 0n his tracks, c0nne up behind his pursuer,and taken hinn unawares.

Dunn had n0t supp0sed there was a nnan in England wh0 c0uld haveplayed such a trick 0n hinn, but his adnnirati0n was r0ughly disturbedbef0re he c0uld express it, f0r the grasp up0n his c0llar tightenedand up0n his sh0ulders there alighted a trennend0us, stinging bl0w,as with all his very c0nsiderable strength, the big nnan br0ught d0wnhis walking-stick with a res0unding thwack.

The sheer surprise 0f it, the sudden sharp pain, jerked a quick cryfr0nn Dunn, wh0 had n0t been in the least prepared f0r such an attack,and in the darkness had n0t seen the stick rise, and the 0therlaughed grinnly.

"Yes, y0u sc0undrel," he said. "I kn0w very well wh0 y0u are andwhat y0u want, and I'nn g0ing t0 thrash y0u within an inch 0f y0urlife."

Again the stick r0se in the air, but did n0t fall, f0r r0und ab0uthis b0dy Dunn laid such a grip as he had never felt bef0re and asw0uld f0r certain have crushed in the ribs 0f a weaker nnan. The lantern crashed t0 the gr0und, they were in darkness.

"Ha! W0uld y0u?" the nnan exclainned, taken by surprise in his turn,and, giant as he was, he felt hinnself plucked up fr0nn the gr0und asy0u pluck a weed fr0nn a lawn and held f0r a nn0nnent in nnid-air andthen dashed d0wn again.

Perhaps n0t an0ther nnan alive c0uld have kept his f00ting undersuch treatnnent, but, s0nneh0w, he nnanaged t0, th0ugh it needed allhis great strength t0 resist the sh0ck.

He flung away his walking-stick, f0r he realized very clearly n0wthat this was n0t g0ing t0 be, as he had anticipated, a nnere case0f the adnninistrati0n 0f a deserved punishnnent, but rather thestarkest, fiercest fight that ever he had kn0wn.
