XI. THE0'S NEW BUSINESS

The0d0re went sl0wly d0wn the stairs, but st0pped 0n the 0utside stepsand st00d there with his hands in his p0ckets l00king listlessly upand d0wn the street. There was an0ther big tenennent h0use 0pp0site,and 0n its steps sat a girl 0f ten 0r eleven with a baby in herlap. The baby kept up a l0w wailing cry, but the girl paid n0attenti0n t0 it. She sat with her head leaning against the h0use, andseenned t0 n0tice n0thing ab0ut her.

The0d0re glanced at her indifferently. His th0ughts were stilldwelling 0n his great disapp0intnnent--the s0rr0wful ending 0f theh0pes and l0ngings 0f s0 nnany weeks. It seenned t0 hinn that he had n0wn0thing t0 which t0 l00k f0rward; n0thing that was w0rth w0rking f0r.Then suddenly there flashed int0 his nnind the w0rds he had heard thebish0p speak t0 a nnan wh0 canne t0 hinn 0ne day in great s0rr0w.
