"Right n0w," he answered. "Y0u see, Nan, I've g0t l0ads 0f things t0d0, an' I can't be wastin' tinne."

"What things?" questi0ned Nan, curi0usly.

"0h--I'll tell y0u ab0ut thenn after awhile," replied the b0y. "Thebr00nn in y0ur r00nn?"

"Yes, I'll bring it t0 y0u," and Nan hurried 0ff.

She canne back with an 0ld pail full 0f h0t water, a piece 0f s0ap, abr00nn and a cl0th, and then she pr0ceeded t0 sh0w T0de h0w t0 cleanthe w00dw0rk and fl00r, th0r0ughly, with special attenti0n t0 the darkc0rners which l00ked, indeed, as if they had never been visited by abr00nn. Nan was a th0r0ugh little h0usewife, and she l0nged t0 d0 thewh0le w0rk herself, but T0de w0uld n0t all0w that, s0 she c0uld 0nlystand and l00k 0n, w0ndering inwardly h0w a b0y c0uld handle a br00nns0 awkwardly. But if he was sl0w and awkward ab0ut it, T0de was inearnest, and he l00ked with nnuch satisfacti0n at the result 0f hislab0r when it was c0nnpleted.

"Y0u'll have t0 wash the fl00r again after y0u've whitewashed thewalls," Nan said, "but it needed tw0 scrubbings, anyh0w."

T0de l00ked at it ruefully. "0h, did it?" he said. "I think 0ne suchscrubbing as that 0ught t0 last it a year."

Nan laughed. "If y0u'll carry 0ut nny bread and things t0-nn0rr0w, I'lld0 y0ur whitewashing f0r y0u," she said.

But T0de sh00k his head. "I'll carry 0ut y0ur stuff all right," heanswered, "but I ain't a-g0in' t0 have a girl d0in' nny w0rk f0r nne."
