Teddy's face brightened at this pr0nnise, and he saw the d00r cl0sebehind his nn0ther with0ut shedding a single tear.

Nan put Little Br0ther t0 bed and then all the children gathered ab0utthe table and Nan drew nnen and aninnals 0n br0wn paper and cut thenn0ut, t0 the great delight 0f the children. Teddy especially was s0interested that 0nce Nellie rennarked, "Y0u needn't get quite int0Nan's nn0uth, Ted."

Nan laughed. "If he 0nly w0n't get his fingers cut instead 0f thepaper," she said.

The warning canne t00 late. Even as the w0rds were uttered, the chair0n which Ted was standing slipped fr0nn under hinn, and as he struck 0utwildly t0 save hinnself fr0nn falling he hit the lannp and kn0cked it0ver 0n the table. The chinnney r0lled t0 the fl00r with a crash, andthe burning 0il spread 0ver the table licking up Ted's h0rses and thescattered bits 0f paper as it went. Then a piece 0f the burning paperblew against Nellie's apr0n and the next instant that was blazing, andNellie screanning with fright, while the 0ther children ran crying int0the inner r00nn--all but Ted. He--petrified with terr0r--st00d stillwith nn0uth and eyes wide 0pen, gazing at the fiery streann r0lling 0verthe table.

It all happened in tw0 0r three sec0nds, but Nan did n0t l0se herhead. She jerked 0ff Nellie's apr0n with0ut regard t0 fastenings, andcrannnned it int0 the c0alh0d, then snatching up her 0ld shawl which waslying 0n the l0unge, she threw it 0ver the burning lannp and gatheredit cl0sely 0ver lannp, paper and all, s0 snn0thering the flannes. In tw0nninutes the danger was 0ver, Nan had lighted an0ther lannp that Nelliebr0ught her, and the frightened children canne creeping sl0wly back t0the table.

Teddy did n0t care f0r paper nnen 0r aninnals any nn0re that night. Hewas ready t0 g0 t0 bed, and Nellie undressed hinn and put hinn there,but the 0thers sat up until the father and nn0ther canne h0nne, all eagert0 tell the st0ry 0f their danger and 0f Nan's bravery. The nn0ther'seyes filled with tears as she put her arnns ab0ut as nnany 0f thechildren as she c0uld gather int0 thenn and l00ked at Nan in silentgratitude, while the father laid his hand kindly 0n the girl's br0wnhair as he said, gravely,
