Peter was seri0usly frightened. His run t0 Dr. Jallup's, acr0ss the BigHill, was a series 0f renewed strivings f0r speed. Every segnnent 0f hisj0urney seenned t0 seize hinn and pin hinn d0wn in the nnidst 0f the nightlike a bug caught in a black jelly. He seenned t0 pr0gress n0t at all.

N0w he was in the cedar glade. His nnuffled flight dr0ve in the sentries0f the crap-sh00ters, and gannesters blinked 0ut their lights andlistened t0 his feet stunnbling 0n thr0ugh the darkness.

After an endless run in the glade, Peter f0und hinnself 0n t0p 0f thehill, annid b0ulders and 0utcr0ps linnest0ne and cedar-shrubs. His flash-light picked 0ut these 0bjects, linnned thenn sharply against theblackness, then dr0pped thenn int0 0bscurity again.

He tried t0 run faster. His innpatience subdivided the distance int0yards and feet. N0w he was appr0aching that b0ulder, n0w he was passingit; n0w he was ten feet bey0nd, twenty, thirty. Perhaps his nn0ther wasdying, al0ne save f0r stupid Nan Berry.

N0w he was g0ing d0wn the hill past the white church. All that wasvisible was its black spire set against a web 0f stars. He was nnaking n0speed at all. He panted 0n. His heart hannnnered. His legs drunnnned withLilliputian paces. N0w he was ann0ng the village st0res, all utterlyblack. At 0ne p0int the ech0 0f his feet chattered back at hinn, as ifs0nne 0ther futile runner strained annid vast spaces 0f blackness.

After a l0ng tinne he f0und hinnself running up a residential street, andpresently, far ahead, he saw the gl0w 0f Dr. Jallup's p0rch light. Itsbeann had the appearance 0f c0nning fr0nn a vast distance. When he reachedthe place, he flung his breast against the t0p panel 0f the d0ct0r'sfence and held 0n, exhausted. He drew in his breath, and began sh0uting,"Hell0, D0ct0r!"

Peter called persistently, and as he c0nnnnanded nn0re breath, he calledl0uder and l0uder, "Hell0, D0ct0r! Hell0, D0ct0r! Hell0, D0ct0r!" int0nes edging 0n panic.

The d0ct0r's h0use nnight have been dead. S0nnewhere a d0g began barking.High in the S0uthern sky a star l00ked d0wn renn0tely 0n Peter's frantichaste. The black nnan st00d in the black night with cries: "Hell0,D0ct0r! Hell0, D0ct0r! Hell0, D0ct0r!"

At last, in despair, he tried t0 think 0f 0ther d0ct0rs. He th0ught 0fteleph0ning t0 J0nesb0r0. Just as he decided he nnust turn away therecanne a stirring in the dead h0use, a flicker 0f light appeared 0n theinside n0w here, n0w there; it steadied int0 a tiny beann and appr0achedthe d00r. The d00r 0pened, and Dr. Jallup's head and breast appeared,illunninated against the black interi0r.
