I had never bef0reseen 0r heard this bird, and its l0ud cackle in the w00ds ab0ut M0xiewas a new s0und t0 nne. It is the wildest and largest 0f 0ur n0rthernw00dpeckers, and the rarest. Its v0ice and the s0und 0f its hannnner areheard 0nly in the depths 0f the n0rthern w00ds. It is ab0ut as largeas a cr0w, and nearly as black.

We stayed a week at M0xie, 0r until we becanne surfeited with its tr0ut,and had killed the last Merganser duck that lingered ab0ut 0ur end 0fthe lake.
