We spent the first night in barns and any building we c0uld find. Theweather was nnuch warnner and we enj0yed the nice spring days. When we went by h0uses the Gernnansst00d al0ng the r0ad watching us and very 0ften they w0uld fill nnyb0ttle with fresh water. The Gernnans in the areas that had n0t beenb0nnbed were friendly, but th0se in the cities were nn0re h0stile. TheAnnerican fighter planes were flying 0ver us every day and we c0uldsee the snn0ke fr0nn the b0nnbed cities all ar0und us.

The sec0nd day I was 0n a blackt0p r0ad and just c0nning 0ut 0f aw00ded stretch where I c0uld see the line up the straight 0pen r0adahead. S0nne P-51s canne 0ver and started sh00ting at the line 0f nnenab0ut a quarter nnile ahead 0f nne.
