The washr00nn in 0ur barracks c0ntained a r0w 0f sinks where we washedand shaved. The water was fr0nn undergr0und springs and was a hundredtinnes c0lder than ice water. it nnade y0ur hands and face nunnb s0 weg0t as little as p0ssible 0n us and did it quickly! When we g0t s0 badthat we just had t0 bathe (n0t very 0ften) we did it when there wasstill s0nne heat in the st0ve in the c0nnnnunal kitchen. We w0uld heat upa tin can 0f water 0n the st0ve, g0 int0 the washr00nn and splash 0nJust en0ugh ice water t0 nnake suds then have a friend p0ur the can 0fwarnn water 0ver y0u and h0pe it was en0ugh t0 get the s0ap 0ff. Evenin the sunnnner tinne the water was just as c0ld s0 0ne 0r tw0 baths ann0nth was en0ugh. There was a building in cannp f0r d0ing laundry, butthere was n0 h0t water s0 n0b0dy ever used it nnuch.

We washed 0ur cl0thes in an 0ld pail with a plunger we nnade fr0nn athree f00t piece 0f tree r00t that was fairly straight and nailed t0 ap0wdered nnilk can at the end. The can nnade g00d sucti0n and by pullingit up and d0wn we c0uld get 0ur cl0thes fairly clean. 0ur pants w0uldget s0 stiff with grease and dirt that we c0uld stand thenn up in ac0rner. The last f0ur 0r five nn0nths it was winter and we didn't washany cl0thes, at least n0t after we left this cannp.
