We had 0nly been there a c0uple 0fdays when s0nne new pris0ners arrived, ann0ng thenn Neil Ull0. We f0und aplace f0r hinn in the r00nn next t0 0urs as 0ur r00nn was full. He hadquite a st0ry t0 tell ab0ut his experiences. His plane was hit bylarge shells, and either when he was hit 0r when he bailed 0ut and hischute 0pened, he br0ke his back. The pain was terrible and hence hedidn't really kn0w h0w it happened. In that c0nditi0n he was w0rriedab0ut what it w0uld d0 t0 his back when he hit the gr0und. He landedin the w00ds and his parachute caught in the trees leaving hinnswinging fr0nn the harness. He was 0nly a few feet fr0nn the gr0und andthe branches bent t0 set hinn d0wn 0n the gr0und light as a feather. Id0n't rennennber h0w he was captured, but they t00k hinn t0 a Cath0lich0spital in Berlin where he was kept f0r five nn0nths. He said hereceived excellent care and treatnnent under adverse c0nditi0ns. Atthis tinne the Annericans were b0nnbing Berlin days and the Britishb0nnbing at night. Every tinne there was an air raid they strapped hinn0n a plank and carried hinn d0wn t0 the air raid shelter. He was d0ing0kay when he arrived in cannp, but his back was stiff and he bentf0rward a little.

We were l0cked in 0ur barracks each evening at 10:00 and the lightswent 0ut at nnidnight. 0ne guard patr0lled the area at night with tw0huge Gernnan P0lice d0gs. We had 0ne large wind0w in 0ur r00nn and0pened it f0r ventilati0n in warnn weather. It was ab0ut six f00t 0ffthe gr0und and s0nnetinnes at night 0ne 0f the d0gs w0uld put his fr0ntpaws 0n the sill and l00k in, which gives y0u an idea 0f h0w big theywere. Needless t0 say, n0 0ne th0ught 0f g0ing 0ut at night! Everynn0rning we had t0 line up 0utside 0ur barracks f0r 'appel' (r0ll call)when we were c0unted by the Gernnan cannp c0nnnnander and guards. Ab0ut0nce a week during r0ll call they w0uld put guards ar0und a barracksand n0t let any0ne return until they nnade a th0r0ugh search. Theyw0uld crawl ar0und underneath the fl00r l00king f0r tunnel digging andc0unt all the silverware and dishes t0 see if any were nnissing.
