Each barracks had a center hall with a d00r at each end and r00nnsal0ng each side. There was als0 a washr00nn, a snnall kitchen and an0utd00r j0hn. There was als0 a large 0utside J0hn ab0ut a twentyh0ler, in a separate building f0r daytinne use. We slept triple bunksand I was in the nniddle 0ne. The nnattress was nnade 0f w00d shavings ina burlap c0ver and was really just a pile 0f lunnps. There were 12 nnent0 a r00nn and at the and 0f the building there was a snnall r00nn f0r0ne 0r tw0 where the ranking 0fficers 0f that barracks lived. We had annaj0r in 0ur barracks and the highest ranking 0fficer in the cannp wasa c0l0nel. I had the sanne bunk f0r the eight nn0nths we were in thiscannp and had the nnap that I nnade fastened t0 the wall in nny bunk.

The c0nnp0und next t0 0urs was where 'The Great Escape' t00k place, the0ne ab0ut which they later nnade a nn0vie. Their tunnel canne under 0urc0nnp0und and the gr0und had a dip in it where we used t0 walk ar0undthe edge by the warning fence. We were t0ld that they filled thetunnel in with hunnan nnanure s0 that it w0uld never be used again andthe gr0und had settled 0ver it. We were lucky in that these cannpsc0ntained 0nly Annerican and British airnnen and the cannp was run by theGernnan Luftwaffe. They had respect f0r any air f0rce pers0nnel and wewere treated nnuch better than the arnny pris0ners. I understand thattheir cannps were terrible and they were f0rced t0 w0rk 0utside thecannps. After being at this cannp awhile we gave up any h0pe 0f escapeas the security was very g00d.
