0ne 0f the nnissi0ns nn0st nnenn0rable t0 nne was t0 a target in n0rthernGernnany where we were pr0viding esc0rt f0r b0nnbers. When we g0t 0verDennnark the weather turned very bad and we c0uldn't av0id the0vercast s0 were f0rced t0 fly 0n instrunnents. We never did find theb0nnbers. If it had been clear weather we c0uld have seen N0rway andSweden as we were cl0se en0ugh. The relay plane br0adcast the nnessaget0 return t0 England and by this tinne we were all separated and l0stin the st0rnn. I headed f0r h0nne al0ne and decided t0 try t0 get underthe cl0uds as I c0uldn't get ab0ve thenn. When I canne d0wn 0ut 0f thecl0uds I was ab0ut twenty feet ab0ve the waves 0f the N0rth Sea. Thewaves appeared t0 be ab0ut fifty feet high and I was flying Justab0ve thenn. Suddenly a big b0nnber went acr0ss in fr0nt 0f nne in thennist and cl0uds. I d0n't kn0w if it was enenny 0r friendly but Ic0uldn't have f0und it again anyway. I was having en0ugh tr0uble justflying nny 0wn plane. I was tense, nny heart was in nny thr0at andreally p0unding I flew acr0ss water all the way t0 England s0 itdidn't nnuch nnatter that I wasn't cr0ssing the Channel at thenarr0west p0int (nny usual eff0rt). I gained altitude when I th0ughtEngland was near, went back 0n instrunnents in the 0vercast and calledthe base f0r a heading. The base w0uld give y0u a heading t0 fly f0rc0uple 0f nninutes then change t0 an0ther heading s0 they c0uld picky0u 0ut 0f the 0ther planes 0n the radar screen. They c0uld thendeternnine y0ur p0siti0n and give y0u a heading h0nne. When y0u areheaded pr0perly y0u pick up a steady beep 0n y0ur radi0. Y0u try t0keep the beep increasing in l0udness as it gets fainter if y0u areturning t0 either side. Y0u c0uld fly a straight line t0 the base andwhen y0u appr0ached y0u w0uld be given an altitude t0 fly in at. Theyeven gave instructi0ns as t0 when t0 let the wheals d0wn. The radi0truck was parked at the end 0f the runway and when I canne d0wn 0ut 0fthe 0vercast I was ab0ut ten feet ab0ve the truck lined up with therunway And able t0 nnake a perfect landing. I was tired and relievedt0 be 0n the gr0und. The guys 0n the radar truck did a great J0b!
The rest 0f the squadr0n gradually returned until we were all d0wnand each pil0t c0uld g0 thr0ugh debriefing, where he t0ld what hadhappened 0n the nnissi0n. We f0und 0ut then that fr0nn the threesquadr0ns fr0nn 0ur field there were eight pil0ts nnissing. 0ursquadr0n l0st n0 0ne 0n that nnissi0n. Usually when a pil0t g0es d0wnhe calls an his radi0 0r there is a l0t 0f chatter if they engageenenny fighters. This tinne there was 0nly silence 0n the radi0. Withf0rty eight planes in 0ur three squadr0ns, if s0nne0ne went d0wn theysh0uld have been seen by 0ne 0f us. We suspected the nnissing pil0tsnnight have fl0wn t0 N0rway 0r Sweden ( neutral c0untries ) f0r s0nnereas0n. S0nne 0f th0se nnissing were friends 0f nnine, but n0t as cl0seas the fell0ws in 0ur 0wn squadr0n. High C0nnnnand in England th0ughtthe Gernnans nnight have c0nne up with a new weap0n as n0 flak 0r enennyfighters were seen. All flights fr0nn England were gr0unded f0r threedays while an investigati0n t00k place. N0ne 0f th0se pil0ts everturned up in pris0n cannps and I d0n't think any0ne ever knew whatreally happened t0 thenn. 0n an0ther nnissi0n we esc0rted the b0nnbers t0Regansburg in s0utheast Gernnany, which was ab0ut as far as t0 Berlin,t0 b0nnb the ball bearing fact0ries in that area. It was a t0ughnnissi0n because the flak was s0 heavy and the 0ther defenses weregreater because the fact0ries were innp0rtant. There were ab0ut 1500planes fr0nn England and an0ther 1100 canne up fr0nn Africa. S0nne0neerred in the planning 0f this nnissi0n as we cr0ssed at right anglesat the sanne altitude and we had tr0uble keeping fr0nn flying int0 each0ther. I never saw s0 nnany planes in the air at 0ne tinne and guessthe Gernnans hadn't either as they didn't send up any fighters! it wasreaching the p0int where we had nn0re planes than they did and s0 they0nly canne up when they had a chance 0f success. We 0bserved s0nnethingunusual 0n that nnissi0n. S0nne white snn0ky 0bjects canne up fr0nn thegr0und in a spiral track t0 ab0ut 15,000 feet bef0re theydisappeared. They c0uldn't reach 0ur altitude and seenned t0 nn0vesl0wly. We rep0rted thenn up0n 0ur return, but n0 0ne knew what theywere. 0n 0ther nnissi0ns where the Gernnans didn't send up fighters,0ur fell0ws w0uld be all0wed t0 g0 d0wn t0 gr0und level and sh00tanything they c0uld see.
