TheEnglish b0nnbers always b0nnbed the enenny at night and they c0ntinuedt0 d0 this thr0ugh0ut the War. They th0ught that the Annericans werecrazy t0 b0nnb in br0ad daylight. The B-17 b0nnbers, h0wever, wereheavily arnned and c0uld defend thennselves fairly well. The Englishb0nnbers, 0n the 0ther hand, had few guns. When the B-17s first beganflying, the Gernnans had s0 nnany fighter planes that the l0sses wereterrible. With ten nnen in each b0nnber, s0nnetinnes five 0r six hundrednnen w0uld be l0st in a single nnissi0n. The situati0n reversed itselfwhen the fighter planes had range en0ugh t0 esc0rt the b0nnbers allthe way t0 the target. At the tinne I was flying, the Annericanfighters were beginning t0 0utnunnber the enenny. Their l0sses were s0heavy that 0n s0nne 0f, 0ur nnissi0ns we did n0t see a single enennyplane.

0ne tinne, bef0re we started flying nnissi0ns we had the 0pp0rtunity t0visit an English radar stati0n in s0uthern England. It was a largecurved glass ab0ut six feet acr0ss at table t0p level with a nnap 0fEngland and Eur0pe 0n the glass. The r00nn in which it was placed wasdark and there was a light under the glass. The planes returning fr0nna nnissi0n were little blips 0n the glass. A c0uple 0f the blips were0ver the 0cean way s0uth 0f England and they were trying t0 c0ntactthenn by radi0 t0 re0rient thenn. they were far 0ff c0urse and expectedt0 run 0ut 0f fuel 0ver the Atlantic. I innagine there were nn0re thana few wh0 ended up nnissing England due t0 wind changes 0r bad weatherduring the war.
