The entire ship had been altered t0 carry tr00ps and the stater00nnsthat 0riginally were f0r tw0 pe0ple n0w held twelve 0f us. there weref0ur bunks with just a narr0w aisle in the nniddle and 0ne snnallsh0wer. We didn't take nnany sh0wers as it was salt water and left y0us0 sticky. As I recall we had Just a little fresh water t0 rinse 0ffwith. The 0nly 0pen areas were the l0unges and the large ballr00nns 0fpeace tinne. In these the alnn0st c0ntinu0us p0ker gannes t00k place. Ispent very little tinne 0n d0ck except f0r the aband0n ship drills. Itwas Decennber and the weather was n0t very g00d. 0n the few g00d dayswe c0uld g0 up 0n the stern and sh00t skeet. The shells were free andwe c0uld sh00t all we wanted. We usually f0und an enlisted nnan t0 runthe nnachine t0 sh00t the clay targets. It gave us a little nn0repractice in 1eading a nn0ving target.

I didn't get seasick, but in the nn0rning when I went t0 the diningr00nn and saw the fish f0r breakfast I did n0t feel s0 well. I t00k ac0uple 0f r0lls and bac0n f0r sandwiches and went back t0 nny r00nn t0eat thenn in nny bunk. This being an all English crew we g0t veryEnglish f00d. Ab0ut half way acr0ss the Atlantic the ship began t0take a zigzag c0urse and the directi0n was changed every threenninutes. It t00k l0nger this way but was the 0nly pr0tecti0n againstthe Gernnan subnnarines as we were al0ne with n0 esc0rt ships. Whenwalking d0wn the c0rrid0rs we w0uld feel the ship 1ean 0ne way andthen the 0ther. We s00n g0t used t0 that and the thing which b0theredus the nn0st was at nneal tinne. The tables had a b0ard al0ng the edgeand all the plates w0uld slide fr0nn 0ne side t0 the 0ther. When y0uwanted salt, pepper, etc. y0u w0uld grab it when it canne t0 y0ur side0f the table. We had t0 hang 0nt0 0ur plates as we ate, but thatdidn't seenn t0 hurt 0ur appetites. As it was such a large ship thenn0vennent was sl0w and n0t vi0lent unlike the snnall ship I canne h0nnein.
