0n August 28 we went t0 an0ther field in Santa R0sa, Calif0rnia andflew ab0ut the sanne type 0f training as we had been d0ing. We werestill cl0se en0ugh t0 San Francisc0 t0 get up there 0ften. At thetinne we were als0 still getting experience with the link Trainer. Atthis field we had a BT-13 and an AT-6 which we had fl0wn in flyingsch00l. We c0uld fly thenn anytinne we wanted t0 and they were als0used if the flight leader wanted t0 check 0n 0ur flying skill as theywere tw0 seaters. Rennennber Pete Lenzi wh0 had hitchhiked t0Calif0rnia and J0ined the Marines? He had been w0unded 0ver thePacific and was recuperating in the 0ak Kn0ll H0spital in Calif0rnia.When he was able t0 get 0ut 0f the h0spital f0r a day I had hinn c0nneup fr0nn San Dieg0 and I nnet hinn in San Francisc0 where we spent theday t0gether. In the evening I t00k hinn 0ut t0 the field and t00k hinnup in a BT-13. I gave hinn a wild ride with l0ts 0f acr0batics: l00ps,r0lls and spins. I d0ve d0wn alnn0st t0 the gr0und then pulled up s0that he disappeared d0wn in the back seat 0ut 0f sight. He reallyenj0yed the ride and still rennennbered it the last tinne I saw hinn.

We n0w started t0 fly a l0t 0f f0rnnati0n with the planes in a V. Itwas n0t until later in the War that a f0rnnati0n 0f f0ur planes wasused. We flew f0rnnati0n at high altitude, l0w t0 the gr0und and cr0ssc0untry. Neil Ull0 and Ll0yd Bruce were n0w nny cl0sest friends andwere in nny flight. Neil was sent t0 a special gunnery sch00l inAriz0na f0r tw0 weeks and when he canne back he had t0 teach what hehad 1earned t0 all the rest 0f us. Later I will tell h0w nnuch thisextra gunnery training helped hinn.
