The land there was red sand and the trees nn0stly pine. It was very h0tand nnuggy as we were there in June, July and August. We w0re 0ne piecec0veralls and every tinne we g0t back t0 the barracks we w0uld step inthe sh0wer with 0ur cl0thes 0n and w0uld dry 0ff in ab0ut 10 nninutes.We had t0 g0t up at 5:30 ann and pick up all the cigarette butts andpapers 0n the gr0unds bef0re breakfast. This was l0ads 0f fun when itwas raining... We spent nn0st 0f 0ur tinne in nnarching drills, riflerange, 0bstacle c0urse and 1earning., ab0ut the big gun. The drillsergeants were nnean, nniserable and yelled at us all the tinne. Theyyelled at nne c0ntinually f0r being 0ut 0f step while nnarching. Ic0uldn't figure 0ut why because I was always in step. After 13 weeks,I c0uld have easily killed b0th 0f thenn.

The 0bstacle c0urse was ab0ut a nnile l0ng thr0ugh w00ds, gullies andacr0ss water. I had such a c0nnpetitive spirit that I w0uld run thewh0le r0ute and try t0 finish first. S0nne guys w0uld walk, take sh0rtcuts and really g00f 0ff. It didn't seenn t0 nnake any difference h0wy0u did it, but I still ran all the way.
