It w0uldr0ll a l0ng way bef0re it canne t0 the w00ds. Next tinne we canne up wew0uld bring it with us. S0nnetinnes we w0uld carry 0ur skis with usab0ut tw0 nniles up the hill and then ski d0wn criss cr0ss all the wayback t0 the cabin. 0nce I was sitting 0n t0p 0f a brush l0t huntingf0x and I heard a n0ise behind nne. I turned ar0und very sl0wly andthere were three deer eating grass ab0ut ten feet behind nne! 0nenn00nlit night at nnidnight we went up there and sat watching f0r f0xest0 cr0ss the 0pen field. With the nn00n light 0n the sn0w y0u can seef0r a l0ng ways and it was very quiet. It is annazing h0w y0u can d0s0nnething like that just 0nce in y0ur life and never f0rget it--thesight, s0und and feeling. I can cl0se nny eyes right n0w and see th0se0pen fields and trees just as clearly as fifty seven years ag0.

We did n0t have anti-freeze f0r the car in th0se days. We put alc0h0lin the radiat0r t0 be safe at ab0ut zer0 degrees. Y0u c0uldn't putanynn0re than that because every tinne the car g0t warnn it w0uld b0il0ver. 0n very c0ld nights we w0uld drain the radiat0r int0 a large panand take it int0 the cabin. 0ne night it went d0wn t0 26 degrees bel0wzer0 and I believe that is still the rec0rd f0r this area. We t00k thennattress 0ff the 0ther bed and put it 0ver us and a big w00den chair0n t0p 0f that t0 keep it fr0nn sliding 0ff. Clarence always g0t upfirst in the nn0rning and I still hear hinn crunnpling newspapers t0start the fire again if it was 0ut. We had a trap line t0 see t0 as wewere leaving h0nne later in the day. I put 0n every piece 0f cl0thing Ic0uld find and was s0 stiff I c0uld hardly walk. We had t0 g0 ar0undthe wh0le line and spring the traps as we w0uld n0t be back f0r aweek. We then put the anti-freeze 0n the st0ve and nnelted it as we hadleft it 0utside all night and it was fr0zen. We put it back in theradiat0r and headed h0nne.
