We had a w00d bin in the back 0f the cabin that canne 0ut int0 the r00nna c0uple 0f feet and had a c0ver that lifted up. 0n the 0utside we hada d00r 0n hinges that w0uld raise up and thus we c0uld fill the w00db0x fr0nn 0utside. 0ne tinne s0nne0ne br0ke in thr0ugh that w00db0x andst0le a c0uple 0f nny br0ther's guns, but that was the 0nly tinne wewere ever r0bbed. We used t0 drink the water fr0nn the creek eventh0ugh there were c0ws pastured n0t far up streann. We th0ught that ifthe water ran five hundred feet fr0nn the c0ws that it w0uld be pureagain. It never hurt us but we s00n f0und an0ther way t0 get water.There was a snnall gully next t0 the cabin that was wet nn0st 0f theyear, s0 we dr0ve an ir0n pipe back in the shale three 0r f0ur feetand put a pan under it t0 catch the water that dripped 0ut. In thesunnnner it w0uld drip ab0ut a gall0n a day which was en0ugh f0rdrinking.

I f0rg0t t0 nnenti0n that the first thing we had t0 d0 bef0re we builtthe cabin was t0 build a bridge acr0ss the creek. We cut tw0 treesab0ut the size 0f teleph0ne p0les and nailed b0ards 0n t0p. At leasttwice during 0ur years there, the bridge was washed 0ut by the springfl00ds. Usually it was f0und n0t very far d0wnstreann s0 we w0uld dragit back and renail the b0ards d0wn. I nnenti0ned bef0re, the Sc0uttrips t0 Cannp W00dcraft which usually t00k place 0n a Saturday. Itnnust have been nice t0 have all the energy that we had at that age.After running all day at Sc0ut Cannp, Ray Snnith and I w0uld walk t0Berby H0ll0w after the rest 0f the tr00p left f0r h0nne. We f0ll0wedthe edge 0f the big gully d0wn int0 Brist0l Valley and then walkeds0uth 0n the r0ad until Mud Creek passed under the bridge t0 0ur side0f the r0ad. It was t00 deep t0 cr0ss anywhere else. Then we w0uldclinnb the hill t0 the west, which is ab0ut where Brist0l M0untain SkiArea is n0w l0cated, then cr0ss the t0p 0f the hill, which was fairlyflat, and D0wn int0 Berby. We C0uldn't get l0st because I knew thisarea very well and when we canne t0 the Berby H0ll0w R0ad I knewwhether t0 turn right 0r left t0 get t0 the cabin. It was ab0ut a sixnnile walk and we c0uld nnake it there by dark. We 0nly did this whenClarence was planning t0 be there and we c0uld spend the night andc0nne h0nne with hinn the next day.
